Ancestors of Arthur Westgarth SIMPSON

Arthur Westgarth Simpson, was born 30 Oct 1899 in 7 Alliance St., Stockton on Tees, DUR1; and died Dec 1956 in Aylesbury, Bucks.. He was the son of Arthur Simpson and Louisa Margaret Mitchell. He married Jane Jarvis 1 Jan 1925 in Middlesbrough, YKS. She was born 24 Nov 1900 in Middlesbrough, YKS, and died Apr 1997 in Slough, Bucks.. She was the daughter of John Henry Jarvis and Sarah Ann Davies.

Arthur joined the Army in 1914 in the Army Engineers, flying in some of the forst aircraft used in battle. He was a Territirial Army reservist after the war and during WWII. After their marriage, Arthur and Jane lived in the Grove Hill area of Middlesbrough; Arthur worked as an engineer in a steel-rolling mill. In the late 1930s Arthur retrained and moved his family to Bourne, LINCS. to work as a supervisor in an Approved school. He and his wife were Master and Matron at St Agatha's School for Girls, Princes Risborough, BUCKS 8 Nov 1948 to 31 Dec 1953; and had a smallholding in Bledlow at the time of his death in 1956.

Arthur Simpson, was born 16 May 1873 in 21 Airton St., Stockton on Tees, DUR4. He was the son of Thomas Simpson and Jane Leonard. He married Louisa Margaret Mitchell 13 Aug 1898 in Shincliffe, DUR5.

Louisa Margaret Mitchell, born 17 Jun 1871 in Saw Mill, Shincliffe, DUR (St Nicholas parish)6,7; died 1906 - 1930 in DUR. She was the daughter of William Mitchell and Ann Wheatley.

At the time of the census in 1881, Arthur was living with his parents at 30 Percy Street, Stockton and was a Traveller. In 1898, he had moved to 15 Webster St., Stockton on Tees, DUR In Oct 1899, he was married, and a Railway Engine Fitter, living at 7 Alliance Street, Stockton.8  10

Thomas Simpson11, was born 1841 in Guisborough, YKS12; died Aft. 1898 in East Hartburn, DUR. He was the son of Alexander Simpson and  Alice  Swales. He was christened 29 Aug 1841, St Nicholas Guisborough, YKS16  He married Jane Leonard Jul - Sep 1859 in Stockton on Tees, DUR. She was born Oct - Dec 1839 in Shotley Bridge, DUR13; died 29 Nov 1874 in 30 Percy St., Stockton on Tees, DUR age 35. She was the daughter of John Leonard and Eleanor Westgarth.

Thomas had moved to Stockton by the census of 1851.14  Jane Leonard was living with her parents North Terrace, Dawdon, DUR (Seaham Harbor)

From 1868, Thomas and Jane were at 6 Airton St, Stockton on Tees, DUR; in 1873, at #21 on the same street. On 17 Nov 1868, Thomas voted Liberal20  At the time of the 1881 census they lived at 30 Percy St., Stockton on Tees, DUR19  From 1873-1898, Thomas was a Foreman Iron Moulder18 17

Thomas married Jane's sister, Sophia Leonard in 1883 in Stockton. She was born in Seaham Harbour in 1854 and died aged 66 in 1920. Between 1886 and 1894, they moved to East Hartburn, DUR15

William Mitchell22, was born 1832 - 1833 in Newcastle, NBL23; He was christened 30 Jul 1837, St Andrew, Newcastle, NBL25 and died Aft. 1898 in DUR. He was the son of Henry Mitchell and Margaret Patchett. He married Ann Wheatley 1856 in DUR.

From 1871-1898, William was a Sawyer26 27 living at the Saw Mill, Shincliffe, DUR28 in 1871. He moved with his family to 16 High Row, Shincliffe, DUR29 before the census in 1881.

Ann Wheatley, was born 1833 in Bradbury, DUR24; Christened 16 Jun 1833, St Edmund Sedgefield, DUR30 and died Aft. 1881 in 16 High Row, Shincliffe, DUR. She was the daughter of John Wheatley and Elizabeth Carver.

Alice Swales, born 1812 in Skelton, YKS35,36; Christening: 25 Apr 1813, Skelton by Guisborough, YKS; died Aft. 31 Mar 1901 in 9 Neasham St., Stockton, DUR. She was the daughter of William Swales and  Elizabeth Stephenson.

In 1841, they lived at Church Street Guisborough, YKS. Between the 1847 and 1850 they moved from Redcar to 14 Thompson St, Stockton on Tees, DUR37 39  In 1881, Alice was a widow living at 4 Haffron St, Stockton on Tees, DUR40 And in March Mar 1901, at 9 Neasham St., Stockton, DUR

John Leonard, born 1812 in Allendale, NBL; Christened 31 Oct 1812, Allendale, NBL53 and died Aft.1855 in Dawdon, DUR (Seaham Harbour). He was the son of John Leonard and Sarah Short. He married Eleanor Westgarth 31 May 1835 in St Thomas, Stanhope, DUR51.

Eleanor "Ellen" Westgarth, born 1815 in Stanhope, DUR; died Aft. 1855 in Dawdon, DUR (Seaham Harbor). She was the daughter of John Westgarth and Ann Place.

John lived in Allendale until 1839, when he moved to Shotley Bridge, living there until 1847. 1847-1849, he was in Stanhope. In 1851, age 39 - North Terrace, Dawdon, DUR52 He was a Builder from 1851 to 1855. Religion: 1837, Primitive Methodist (Alston, CUM)
